Ugly Thing Costs 25 Bucks

Uggggggggg! Here is the new New York State license plate. It is apparently a tribute to the plates that the state used prior to 1986. The new plate will be rolled out earlier than expected so that the state can grab another $25 from residents who are renewing their registration, a fact that is not sitting well with motorists. As for the actual aesthetics of the places, one irate driver told the Post that, "they're ugly. It looks like we live in Delaware or something." OUCH. That is some A. A. Gill-type bitchery right there.

I don't hate it, but I'm a sucker for anything old-timey. It would look great on a '74 Dodge Dart, maybe less so on a late model Toyota Camry or Chevy Malibu.

And to all the car drivers whining about $25 worth of fees: boo-hoo! I don't care. In the last few years, my Metrocard fare hikes have gone up by almost $25/month.

Shit would rock a Volvo or SAAB.

I kind of like the throwback. Not that I'm nostalgic for those dark days growing up in the suburbs of LI, but I never really liked the generic "classy" plates they started doing after they ditched the ugly ones. I do wish it was more old-timey at least font-wise, I especially dislike that ugly word-art EMpire staTE on the bottom. Blech.

And? For $25 you'd think they could spring for raised lettering. Who doesn't want their plate embossed. Now that's classy. Also, if you're going to go retro, why not hit up the cool orange-on-black from the sixties: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_registration_plates_of_New_York

It's tacky and bad.
The only car that would suit is a PT Cruiser.

If they want to something that's old and honest, why not bring back the metal plates, stamped out by prisoners at Ryker's Island. Numbers and metal, no fancy fonts or graphics. Something that looks like it's worth 25 bucks.

Yea, with the Statue of Liberty on it. (And don't go telling me that it's in New Jersey; Frenchie didn't donate that shit to Hoboken.)

MF Doom referenced this style of NY license plates on the Madvillain album, on the song "Raid." This is what he said:

"to date, the Metal Fellow been rippin flows since New York plates was ghetto yellow, with broke blue writing."

Looks about right.
