Kids todayThe future is now: "University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student Adam Bauer has nearly 400 friends on Facebook. He got an offer for a new one about a month ago. 'She was a good-looking girl. I usually don't accept friends I don't know, but I randomly accepted this one for some reason,' the 19-year-old said. He thinks that led to his invitation to come down to the La Crosse police station, where an officer laid out photos from Facebook of Bauer holding a beer – and then ticketed him for underage drinking." “I feel like it is a breach of privacy,” Stenholt said. “You feel like you should be able to trust cops.”

    Haha… stupid kid

I had a boss who used to routinely tell me, "You pal around too much with people on this job. They're not your friends. I'm your friend."

Well, he was a schmuck–and not very friendly, either, for a friend–but unfortunately, there was a grain of truth in that lump of coal.

Am I as naive as these kids, or is holding a beer not proof of drinking a beer (forgetting the fact that there's no proof it's not just a photo of someone who looks a lot like you)?

    Non-friends don't let friends drink.

This sort of thing strikes me as a response to this sort of thing http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2007/01/31/laxdrunks/ . To which I respond, you know, build a taller fence?

Apparently one of the Deans at my alma mater was doing this, too, back in the day when facebook was only for .edu elitists and pretty much anyone could see your profile so long as they were in your educational network. I was long gone by then, but am pretty thankful that the deans did not have the authority to rifle through all the photos developed at the campus bookstore in the early naughts.
