Yeah, German Unification Day has to be on a different date because of that unfortunate Kristallnacht coincidence. That always bothered me.
In 1988, I went to live in a small German city for a year. That autumn, there was a concentrated spell of small shops celebrating their 50th year in operation, all of them along one certain main business street of the old downtown section. During some weeks you could stand looking down that street and see bunting and banners on each of five or six different storefronts. So that's one way this day is commemorated. (As far as I can recall, none of those banners went into much detail about how Opa got his lucky break through a once-in-a-lifetime deal on prime commercial real estate in November 1938.)
