Holocaust Memorial Fashion Shoot Was Probably Not A Good Idea

by Balk posted @12:50 PM

Insert your own "skinny model" joke hereNever forget: "The airline easyJet is withdrawing all copies of its in-flight magazine, easyJet Traveller, after a row erupted over a tasteless fashion shoot at the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin…. The latest issue of the in-flight magazine featured two unsanctioned photographs of models posing in designer clothes among the famous concrete blocks of the 'Field of Stelae', Germany's foremost memorial to commemorate the six million Jewish victims of the Nazi genocide."

what? the holocaust isn't 'in' this (stewardess fashion?) season?

They could have at the very least picked a guy to model who *didn’t* look like he was a member of the Gestapo.

When I was at this memorial, the symmetry of the place is what first grabs you. And you think what a neat picture this would make. I have hundreds from that day: endless rows of uneven thick grey slabs. But what's so genius about the design of this thing is that you walk through it like a cemetery and you can't see above or beyond the slabs directly in front of you. So you have this actual physical sensation of being trapped and blinded. It's terror inducing.

Even young kids who didn't know where the fuck they were, would approach the memorial with a cavalier sense of fun (hopping from one slab to the next) but eventually when they walked through it, you could sense how unnerved they were, even as children.

Fashion Shoah? I both love and hate you.

But were the models in blackface?

To be fair, most of the models were probably skinnier than… I CAN'T, I CAN'T!!!

Once totally called a girl out for plastering similar shots of herself all over Facebook after a trip to Berlin once and WHATTAYA KNOW they were all scrubbed from the internet with the quickness after she figured people got wise.

Just be glad their not in stripes.

When I walked by the memorial there were signs saying "No Sunbathing" and people sunbathing on the tops of the stelle. Those Germans, it's a constant flip-flop between anti-authoritarianism and Antisemitism except when it is both together.
