The silent majority of Verlyn Klinkenborg enthusiasts must stand up and be counted! People love to make fun of the New York Times editorial board member but they are very wrong people who hate words and things that are different.

I often like Klinkenborg's Lake Wobegon-esque, gently wandering stories about farm life, but the bicycle one did have me scratching my head. I thought I was missing the metaphor or something ...
No, you are not crazy. It was not his best work AT ALL.
If you want words, get your hands on the classic (& class-conscious) Klinkenborg browbeat, The Nation's JoAnn Wypijewski on The Last Fine Time in 1991:

I love reading Verlyn Klinkenborg's writings, especially those that end up being printed in the NYTimes. I have to admit however, that with a name like that, I thought without thinking about it, that he was a women. Now I know however that I have been reading the visions and perspectives of a man.
