Awl columnist D.R. Adams is on a brief Internet sabbatical. (COLOR ME JEALOUS, HEATHER.) He will be communicating via something called "the mail." (If you remember, the mail is where you used to get "the checks," back when you had a job!) What follows is our commissioning of a column, which will be published next week, whenever the fine people at the U.S.P.S. allow. Now if you will excuse me, I must go find some "stamps."

So you're right-handed. Well, that explains that.
My comment is on the way. Watch for a pigeon on your windowsill. (Do not let Cat eat my pigeon!)
It's funny, two women in my office were just lamenting the fact that handwriting is not a required course in elementary schools anymore. "What is this world coming to?" one of them asked. Apparently they also teach children to spell 'phonetically' now! I am never having children.
Hey Matt -- I'm a 1st grade teacher and we most certainly do teach handwriting. We also allow and encourage children to spell words phonetically in independent writing. That way they don't get hung up and stop writing to ask how to spell every word in their stories correctly. It frees them to express their thoughts in writing. The editing process follows up when/if the child is ready to "publish" a piece of writing for others in the class to read. Throughout the year as spelling words and high frequency words are introduced and practiced, these words become words we expect the children to spell correctly all the time. So, don't be afraid to go ahead an have a few kids! HA!
The little stars and heart are a nice touch, but where the hell are all the emoticons? I'm having trouble figuring out how you're feeling without them.
Well, now I see why we don't get our Awl emails anymore. Choire's been busy taking calligraphy classes.
It's so perfect it almost doesn't seem real.
Your print is part Hipster Grifter/ part Unibomber. I would like to take you to lunch one day and do a phrenological examination. I suspect you have the Occipital Bone of a young Mark David Chapman.
I have the most messed up handwriting ever. Sometimes I get home from event-reporting and I just decide not to write anything at all, because I cannot read any of my notes.
This is the golden age of board games. Seriously, have you played Settlers of Catan? Or Power Grid? They are to Monopoly what Jesus is to Satan, except that they both exist.
I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANY OF THESE THINGS, WHAT!?

But secretly, the cool kids are all playing Dominion at the moment (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218).
Settlers of Cattan can boggle down in mindless dice rolling. I need a number 6!
I recommend the two player card version. It gets bogged down less often, and is a lot of fun to play, especially if you lack for friends.
Seriously. Ticket to Ride is fun as hell. man, zee Germans are board game superfreaks.
I love both Settlers and Ticket To Ride.
Epic boardgames; The Awl just garnered itself so many cool points in my book.
Only half-baked? I would expect both of you to be stoned this late in the day on a Friday.
Where on Earth did you find a scribe in this day and age!?
Amanuenses"R"Us
is that anything like Papy"R"us?
You did a great job staying in the margins!!!
Diplomacy is a great boardgame - it's a bit more old school than your fancy Catans or Dominionses, but it's super rad just the same. Kinda like multiplayer chess with deal-making and scheming and conniving. Plus, no dice.
Diplomacy is pretty good, but the era from whence it came is an otherwise barren wasteland, boardgame-wise. Risk? The Game of Life? Those were crimes against humanity...
What's on the right side of the page?
It's a "cock and balls" picture isn't it? Admit it!
It's to the point now where any hand written missive looks extremely threatening.
If print dies this type of correspondence dies with it

Exclamation Point Count: 5 (and 2 of those are repeats for emphasis).
Choire, do you just hate actually writing !s, or should we be worried about you?
ZOMG NAMECHECK! I am going to live happily under the delusion that it is in fact a callout to me in that first sentence.
Awwwww. I love that he's so romantic that way.... loves to write "real stuff" on paper with a pen. I bet he has an ink well ;)
i notice Cat refused to sign off on it.
I enjoyed this.
D. R. Adams goes postal.
