Senate Minority Thinks It's Okay To Arbitrate Rape

Thirty Republican Senators voted against an amendment prohibiting defense contracts for any company which restricts its employees "from taking workplace sexual assault, battery and discrimination cases to court." Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who sponsored the amendment, makes the case in the speech above: It's a horrifying story. The amendment passed 68-30.

Were the individual men who raped her, and the individual men who falsely imprisoned her prosecuted?

I thought no. (I might be wrong.)

From what I remember (Jezebel has been covering this case for awhile now), no, no individuals were prosecuted.

WHAT. The fuck.

Over two years later, the Justice Department has brought no criminal charges in the matter. In fact, ABC News could not confirm any federal agency was investigating the case.

Legal experts say Jones' alleged assailants will likely never face a judge and jury, due to an enormous loophole that has effectively left contractors in Iraq beyond the reach of United States law.

"It's very troubling," said Dean John Hutson of the Franklin Pierce Law Center. "The way the law presently stands, I would say that they don't have, at least in the criminal system, the opportunity for justice."

between this and their seeming inability to be held accountable for acts of violence against Iraqis - we're really pushing some sort of 'rape and pillage' agenda, one would venture to guess.

Go, Franken. An excellent first step in what will hopefully be a Wellstone-esque tenure in the Senate.

Rape, shmape. Why must Al Franken hurt America by prohibiting our heroic defense contractors from using the latest Enhanced Flirtation Techniques? I understand they are very effective. USA!

No accountablility is, perhaps, one example of what Blackwater and The Taliban have in common.

I hear justice delivered via .357 Magnum is quite effective in these cases. Apropos, too.

I'm surprised I haven't seen any coverage of the fact that good old John McCain is among the 30 Nays.
