Literally twos and threes of people turned out last night to protest the coloring of the Empire State Building last night because it is China-colored, until sometime Friday morning! This is in honor of the 60th "anniversary" of China, which is a very young country apparently. How offensive! Here is a stunning report from Fox News' Shep Smith, who, oddly, refers to New York City as "Tiny Town," of which presumably he is the mayor and first lady both. Anyway, China is a really bad place, and we should pretend it doesn't exist and also never buy anything from there, including U.S. dollars, which they also own.

You've got to admit Fox news has a pretty wide scope when it comes to the types of stories they air, They go from petty takes on human interest stories all the way to petty, small minded, insightless takes on national and international issues all while being Fair and Balanced. There has got to be an award for this.
The People's Republic of China is a oligarchic dictatorship that persecutes its people and propagates instability globally through its puppet regime in North Korea and tacit support of Iran. I get pissed off at my friends who wear their Mao hats because they think it's cool and I am disturbed when I see the Red flag flying outside the Waldorf-Astoria.
I hope and pray that the democratic, capitalist systems in Hong Kong and the Republic of China (Taiwan) eventually will bleed into the mainland power structures and lead to a truly free and democratic China.
These sorts of "salutes" to the PRC are abhorrent and offensive. We can't let their economic power blind us to their crimes against humanity. I hate to agree with Fox on this one, but...
I'm no pro China apologist, but things there are going in the right direction. Slowly. But that is the only way it can work there. A fast move to democracy would be catastrophic (russia x 1,000,000,000). The very number of people being put out of work by just the middling market system they have moved toward is causing strain. Economic stability and greater exposure to the rest of the world will bring change... slow change. You know what happens when things on the mainland happen fast? Death. Lots of it.
Taiwan?! Clearly the mao hat wearers aren't the only ones who are misled. Taiwan's decades of grotesque KMT corruption (propped up by us) is a black eye on the idea of "democracy" or real capitalism.
Thanks for the History lesson, but I don't think anyone here is going to challenge a rather common opinion on China's oppressive regime, btw you forgot their stance on Sudan and the nature of their "development" push in Africa. I think the lack of complexity in the discussion is the discussion.
Sudan is thorny and, yes, questionable. I'm not saying China is some kind of ideal. "Nature" of their development push in Africa? It's like any other resource hungry nation's development push anywhere.
It IS the lack of complexity because of a general lack of knowledge about China on all sides... and yet, everyone seems so certain. China! Communists! Oppression! Pandas!
My response wasn't to you Abe. You are on point above and below I refer to "Nature" in development push in Africa because for some reason when China is mentioned in this context for some reason they (China) are supposed to take some sort of high moral ground that has yet to exist on the planet, as opposed to doing whatever is in their interest like the rest of the world. This gets closer to the complexity I spoke of. I say this being a supporter of Taiwan and it's plight but, wait, I think we agree.
Ah, yes. I get bent out of shape about China critics carrying, amusingly, a "party line." Taiwan supporter? Really? Well, they've come a long way in just the last few years but...
The but about Taiwan would be that for all the ballyhoo a lot of folks don't realize that There were native people there before the ethnic Chinese arrived and now it's a bit ironic that a lot of the folks in power in Taiwan, being often times mostly ethnic Chinese and taking stances against China's tyranny... but I can't do the issue justice here really.
Oh, I KNOW. So much irony over there.
Hong Kong and Taiwan DID bleed into mainland China. That's why it went from oppressive agrarian nightmare to toxic, industrial wasteland nightmare in the last 30 years.
Don't fret, folks, China as a unified entity will cease to exist in the next 10-20 years.
They are fucking lights! Recognizing a number! Of time the planet has orbitted some Solar shit since something happened!
No no, though...seriously everyone...if we recognize an anniversary, of China(!!!) who is currently killing all sorts of adorable kittens, will hear about these lights, and think "Hey, America agrees we should kill these kittens!" and then they'll kill all sorts more of kittens. FUCK if that happens, democracy and freedom and shit.
Come on, can't we find actual shit to protest these days?
Christian Bale.
Surely he meant to say Himey Town?
