Man And Beast: The Right Way, The Wrong Way

the lionThere are different ways to engage with wild animals. One way is like Nick Brandt, whose photos from East Africa are breath-taking in the tradition of Peter Beard, and who says things like this: "What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being-before, in the wild at least, they cease to exist." To get that photo of the lion, for example, he says, "I went back to that lion-because I loved his face-17 days in a row just to sit there and watch him flat on his back, sleeping. On the 18th day, a storm finally came in, and the second that the wind ahead of the storm smashed into his face, he sat up, and I got four photos in 20 minutes." If you're in LA, he has a show up now.

Another way to engage with the animals is like Kelly Ann Walz, who kept an African lion, a cougar, a jaguar, a tiger, a bear, a leopard and two servals on her property 30 miles outside of Allentown, Pennsylvania. Tragically, Walz's bear, which she'd raised from a cub and named "Teddy," attacked and killed her Sunday. She'd entered his cage to clean it, thinking a shovelful of dog food was enough to distract the 350-pound animal. It is a terrible story. Her two young children were watching, along with a neighbor, Scott Castone, who shot and killed the bear.

And here is a totally crazy (and unrelated) Youtube video that emphatically illustrates the problems with the latter approach.

I'm too horrified by that story to click on the video. Just tell me what happens.
Also - how the fuck do people get lions and tigers and bears to keep as pets??

Black market. There's a lion loose in a rural area near the mediterranean coast in Spain. People are keeping their pets in, farmers are protecting their animals with shotguns, and the Civil Guard is doing infrared searches. I just hope the original (and illegal owner)got 'et.

Hers were legal, though. (Which is more fucked-up, not less.) "Walz's husband, Michael Walz, had longstanding permits to keep, sell and display exotic animals."

I imagine that he broke out of the Ohio sanctuary to find his old alligator pal. They're probably wandering the country now, setting right wrongs and having other wacky adventures.

I'm on team bear. Having been stalked and attacked by my own sweet pussycat when his dish has been empty too long, I don't assume any animals are on my side. And he hogs the blankets too.

If Sigfried & Roy can tame the wild beasts, what hope do the rest of us have!?

can = can't.

Damn.

It's amazing that humans have made it this far.

I think Grizzly Adams is to blame for this. He made having a bear for a pet look like so much fun!

Wasn't there a program years ago about a pet lion with vision problems that lived in Manhattan?

I don't trust my memory on this, but on the other hand can't believe that I would just invent it myself...

Maybe you are thinking about Clarence the cross-eyed lion? Probably not. But how many shows/movies about visually impaired lions can there be?
