I think you're absolutely right, LM. Just a nice green field and some trees. Fuck architects, fuck developers and all these stupid, greedy people. The trite answer would be 'but then the terrorists would have won'. No the terrorists did win, by showing us all up to be a bunch of arrogant, venal people, all looking to exploit this tragedy to our own ends - from the bloodthirsty Cheney, Wolfowitz et al and the 'Project for a new American Century' to chancers like me, seeing this as an opportunity, a shortcut to the success we're so sure is our birthright.
To be honest, I never did submit my design, after however many long long nights over many many months I spent working on it. The noble reason being that I was so disgusted by how this event had been so utterly distorted and misused by the right (and by myself) and not wanting any part of it; the realistic reason being that I knew I didn't have a chance and didn't think it worth the hundred bucks or whatever on the courier charge to NYC when almost certainly my presentation boards would just be making a brief detour to the design committee before ending up in Fresh Kills with all the other WTC detritus.
It was enough for me to have done it (and sure, it's a nice addition to my portfolio).
Anyway, I'm taking down that page as I'm sure that anybody who wants to see it has done so, and also I'm sure that neither Choire or Balk, and certainly not that hardass David Cho want their fine website to be used by losers like me as a vehicle for personal promotion... or in my case I'm sure, personal demotion.

I've always thought the whole site should be turned into a park, in which we should plant exactly 2,974 trees. There might not be enough space for that many trees, but you get the idea.

As a young, ambitious Maya Lin-wannabe, I submitted a design to the Memorial competition back in '03 (and it was *pretty* good, a lot like the winning entry except I had my pools within 2 massive concrete monoliths rather than at grade level, also my old Dell didn't *quite* have the juice to make those really crisp renderings)... anyway, stuff like this sure makes me glad I never won!

It's coming through a hole in the air,
from those nights in Tiananmen Square.
It's coming from the feel
that this ain't exactly real,
or it's real, but it ain't exactly there.
From the wars against disorder,
from the sirens night and day,
from the fires of the homeless,
from the ashes of the gay:
Democracy is coming
to the U.S.A.
