Fair enough. I should point out that the context of that quotation was a discussion of the failure of the European left to reap any advantage from the financial crisis, so it wasn't exactly celebrating European political systems in contrast to our own.

Still, regardless of intra-party bickering, what truly dooms us is that the Democratic party is addicted to huge donations from corporate lobbying groups and financial firms like Goldman Sachs. Hence their seeming inability to push through meaningful financial regulation, a public option tied to medicare rates, effective economic stimulus, etc.

European political parties don't have the Democratic party's fragmentation not because there's something wrong with the Democrats that Europeans do not suffer from, but because of proportional representation and coalition politics. So, a party for the farmers, one for traditional industrial labor, two or three tiny noisy ones for the overeducated … The fragmentation is on the outside as it were. One party for what would correspond to each main fragment of our two parties, roughly. And no single party trying to pretend all the interests line up at any given time as a "liberal" or "conservative" bloc. — It's got its points but it gives a lot of power to party central committees and ensures that most main decisions are taken behind closed doors. Me, I like the bickering to be public.

Not entirely. I thought this comment on crookedtimber pretty much sums it up:
