Be Careful Not To Get Not Drunk Enough This Weekend

homer drunkEver hear someone in a bar blab on about how drunk people are more likely to survive car accidents or falls down stairs or something because when you're drunk your body is all loose and flexible? Apparently, as Scientific American's Rachel Kremens reports, there might be something to the idea. "Research published in the journal American Surgeon reveals that trauma patients are more likely to survive if they were intoxicated at the time of their injury."

Yes! Awesome! "A retrospective study of nearly 8,000 trauma patients found that seven percent of people who came in sober died of their injuries, while those who were hurt while drunk only died one percent of the time. A positive blood alcohol level seemed to increase the likelihood of survival, even after the researchers took into account the age of the patient and the severity of the injury."

Exactly how booze might help trauma victims is not known, but tests on animals have shown that ethanol protects against nerve damage. (I think it's the looseness. Someone needs to do a looseness study.)

And here, as a musical accompaniment to this interesting information, is a video of the great Richard Thompson playing his great song, "God Loves A Drunk."

I was in a car accident and realized there was no way to get control of my car as it spun in circles. That thought popped into my head as it was about to flip over. So I relaxed and waited for the car to stop. Other than a bruise from the seat belt I walked away with no injuries.

If you had that much time, you might have reached into the glovebox, pulled out the bourbon, and had a slug…

It was a Sunday afternoon and I was stone cold sober. A friend of mine once drove her car though a storefront window when she was drunk. They told her in the ER the reason she had no injuries was because she was drunk and I remembered it.

So Homer Simpson is right. Alcohol is the cause of and the solution to all of life's problems

I don't care what anyone says in any driver's ed class, if your car goes totally out of control, the best solution is to relax and let the car do what it's going to do. I was driving a car that hydroplaned and then rolled over, and not to get into too many details, but if I had tried to do anything I would have tumbled down a 200 foot gorge rather than into a gutter.

Those of us on PCP are immortal, so that works too.

Balk, if you'd like to conduct a looseness study, I have some openings in my schedule.
(finally, can I also cross post this comment in the singles ads section?)

A drunk stopped his car on the freeway at night to take a nap and laid down on the front seat. My Dad was going to the airport early and smashed into the dude's rear-end going 70 miles per hour. Dude had bruises and walked away – no air bags either. My Dad was in the hospital for 4 days. So there's that.

I like to think that my late teens to early 30's were one long looseness study. Then I ran out of grant money.

    This study is an enabler.
