This Is Our Roman Polanski Post

PolanskiBALK: You wanna do Polanski? I can't believe he fell for that whole "fake film festival" ruse.

CHOIRE: Right?

BALK: "You fool, there's no such country as Switzerland."

CHOIRE: Heh.

BALK: Anyway, you want to do it?

CHOIRE: I feel like it's old and everyone's already talked about it.

BALK: I guess so.

BALK: Did you see that documentary?

CHOIRE: I did. It was very convincing.

BALK: It was! I definitely believe he fucked that girl now.

My favorite is Jack Nicholson discussing it years later. You have to imagine the voice saying: "People have their peculiarities."

katiebakes

Oh my god he said that? Animated GIF please?

Every word Jack Nicholson says should be a six-syllable word. I'll count "nor the inclination" as one line item.

I don't have a strong opinion on the Polanski thing (well, actually I do, but it's totally uninformed, so I'm going to keep it to myself), but I want to say I LOVE that sad guy with the big mustache in the photo.

I know! I'd like him to appear in the background of more photos, please.

It would almost make statutory rape charges worth it!

In the next shot he will pull out a More cigarette and sigh.

My Number Is My Address

I think he's a famous Hollywood lawyer but I can't think of his name. He is older or dead now. Unlike Polanski.

naugahydeandseek

OK, can you do some more probing? New York will want to know?

He admitted to the act. I wonder if he is attoning today while sitting in his cell?

How come no one ever mentions Pirates?

Or "Tess" that starred a young Natasha Kinski.

I was initially surprised that the Swiss would hand him over until I realized Polanski was Jewish, and well, just sayin'.

To clarify, I'm "just sayin'" the Swiss are a trifle anti-semitic.

TerseNursePornstein

C'mon. If at all, shouldn't you be J'accuse-ing the U.S.?

Bittersweet
Bittersweet (#765)

The Swiss are a trifle anti-just about everyone who isn't Swiss.

Lionel Mandrake

I visited Switzerland a few years ago, during the whole reparations kerfuffle, when Holocaust survivors were trying to get back some of the looted assets that the Nazis had left there. Suffice to say, more than a few Swiss I spoke to were not happy with "Ze Jews" for "meddling with the banks" during that period of time.

Kataphraktos
Kataphraktos (#226)

So Jews get a "Get out of jail for anal rape free" card? I DID NOT KNOW THAT

The Swiss are brigands facilitating felons on the run and tax evaders. They should be bombed into the stone age. They deserve it as much as any Ahmdinenotgonnaworkhereanymore or Kim Jong Illin'. It's high time they did the right thing.

Maybe next time the Germans decide to wipe out a minority or six, they can open their borders to refugees instead of turning them away and keeping their wealth.

Lionel Mandrake

Do you actually know anything about the Polanski case?

Also...actually I have no idea what you're trying to say, because: a) you seem not to have grasped the point I was making, and b) you seem to be trying to make about 9 points all at the same time.

If you read the transcript of the trial and the girl's deposition...it wasn't a very nice, consensual-sounding statutory rendezvous. It was actually a rather violent-sounding anal rape (redundant?). www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/polanskicover1.html
(I think that's the link - SG is blocked at my office.)

I believe she forgave him in a recent op-ed. I'd like to get her weigh in on this latest development.

NinetyNine

I think one of the notions underlying a justice system is that an individual can offer forgiveness for a criminal act, but that doesn't really impact whether or not a community sees fit to imprison someone for drugging a pre-teen and raping her.

kitten_witawip

I posted it in the comments here yesterday:

JaguarPaw

She said she had "no hard feelings" toward him "or any sympathy, either" in the LATimes op-ed. I think she just wants it out of the news already. Plus it has to be dispiriting that "important" government leaders (Monsieur Sarkozy, et. al.) publicly discredit a rape victim in favor of an "artist" who has "suffered enough" - as if any of his past justifies raping a 13 year-old.

zidaane
zidaane (#373)

The part were she says he perfomed "cuddliness" on her might drive home the point she was just a child.

kitten_witawip

I noticed that the first time I read that too about 10 years ago.

davidwatts

Just, really, everyone. Just, really. Who knew The Awl's readers were such a moralizing bunch? Next, their thoughts on the dangers of reverse marriage!

Baboleen
Baboleen (#1,430)

It's just that there is something about rape that tugs at my conscience.

HiredGoons
HiredGoons (#603)

Yeah, pretty much.

kitten_witawip

Yeah, it's the kiddie rape thing.

HiredGoons
HiredGoons (#603)

The fact that he gave her a quaalude makes it extra douchey.

kitten_witawip

And then asked her if she was on birth control and when was her last period before he decided to blow his load in her ass.

meerkat
meerkat (#228)

I'd like to believe a strong sense of morality is behind the years'-long effort to bring him to justice; but really, I think it's just because he jumped bail, and made the judge look like an idiot.

Baboleen
Baboleen (#1,430)

So they're killing two birds with one rapist.

RonMwangaguhunga

If only they had snagged Pappa John Philips.

"Cuddliness". Though whisker-burn isn't very "cuddly", it's preferable over sphincter-rip. Ouch!
