The Awl Voter Guide For September 29, 2009

One of today's VERY SEXY racesAttention New York City Democrats: Today's election-did you know there was one?-may be the only such event in your lifetime in which your vote makes a difference. I was at my precinct at 8 this morning, and the poll workers were already desperate for human contact. The choices today are not exactly inspiring, but that's the price you pay for a stultified political culture in which civic involvement often seems discouraged. If you are, in fact, inclined to vote, here are our endorsements:

PUBLIC ADVOCATE
In our previous voter guide we explained that we were disinclined to vote for Bill de Blasio due to his support of the Atlantic Yards project. However, that was when there were several other alternatives to Mark Green. Today there are not. We endorse Bill de Blasio.

COMPTROLLER
It will be a wonderful day when New York elects the first Asian-American to a citywide position. Hopefully, when that day comes, the candidate will be someone less itch-inducing than John Liu. We re-affirm our earlier endorsement of David Yassky.

Okay! Go out there and pull the lever. Do it for yourself, do it for democracy, and do it for those poor schmucks sitting by the polling booths. They're so lonely right now.

Nah. I usually get that out of the way BEFORE work.

I was number 2 this morning! Wait, that sounds a little gross. I was the second voter in my election district, how about that? I was hoping to get a little prize or something, but no dice.

The NYT ran an editorial about how so few people will vote in today's runoff election. Then they said "In New York City, the Democratic choice in these races is usually the winner."

Where's the outrage for those of us who refuse to check a box on the voter registration and so we can't vote in primaries? Why is it the board of election's business which party I chose? Why isn't anyone outraged that (other than Bloomberg) there's no legitimate choice in the general election for citywide office?
Ugh. I should just give up and pick a fucking party...but it's just too Boss Tweedy for my taste.

I remember voting and thinking my vote counted. I voted for term limits. I'm still trying to remove that vote from my asshole, which is where Bloomberg and the ever-atrocious Christine "Rosie O'Donnell" Quinn rammed it a few months back.

So, fuck the voting process, as soon as my company is up and running, I'm moving to Europe where I can evade taxes with the best of them, and vote for the broad with the biggest tits.
