Polls Tighten In New Jersey Race

Not the face you want to see behind you"Christopher Christie is still ahead in the Garden State, but when he looks in the rear-view mirror, he sees the bearded visage of Gov. Jon Corzine getting closer," says Quinnipiac's Maurice Carroll of a recent poll showing the incumbent governor down by a mere four points among likely voters. Given both of these guys' driving records I don't know that that's the metaphor I would have gone with, but still: Excitement! It's a real race now. But then it was always going to be: The numbers generally tighten up in the Democrats' favor as New Jersey elections draw to a close. Still, can the beleaguered Corzine really actually beat his tubby opponent? Maybe the governor should run a positive ad this time, lauding Christie for his staunch fandom of the Garden State's favorite musical son: It could just be a shot of Christie looking fat, with the slogan "Christ Christie: New Jersey's BIGGEST Springsteen fan."

With a smile of Christian charity his bearded visage shone,
He stilled the rising tumult, he bade the race go on;
He signaled to the voter, and once more the smear ads flew,
But Corzine still ignored them, and to Christie said: "Fuck you."

That's right, Katie. Corzine needs to get a positive message out, because reelection races are a referendum on the incumbent and he needs to convince voters he's doing a good job. But if you can't do that, an incumbent always has a second option: destroy your opponent and raise even more doubts about him than voters have about you. But you said that so much better!

Oh just paraphrasing Ernest Thayer. I still can't see a headline referring to "Christie" and New Jersey politics without mentally filling in Todd Whitman. I can't be alone on that.

The Bush toady versus the former Vampire Squid, Inc. CEO. These are the days when I'm glad I'm not longer registered in Jersey.
