Minnesota Keeping Government Out Of Our Healthcare

EMMERTom Emmer, a Minnesota state representative who is running for governor and therefore making a lot of noise, and who formerly was a lawyer who represented insurance companies, though he also sidelined in representing police departments against all those pesky "excessive force" lawsuits that people frivolously file, and who has since created the Firearms Freedom Act, which would save Minnesotans from the federal government by protecting any guns made in the state from being registered or regulated by those fatcats in Washington, would now like to amend the state constitution. "I just don't want the government getting between my decisions with my doctors" is what he told the New York Times. But now let us read his proposed amendment.

An amendment to the Minnesota Constitution is proposed to the people. If the amendment is adopted, a section shall be added to article XIII, to read: Because all people should have the right to make decisions about their healthcare, no law shall be passed that restricts a person's freedom of choice of private healthcare systems or private health plans of any type. No law shall interfere with a person's or entity's right to pay directly for lawful medical services, nor shall any law impose a penalty or fine, of any type, for choosing to obtain or decline health care coverage or for participation in any particular health care system or health plan.
For this, you want to amend a constitution? Just to make sure that, essentially, employers can refuse to give employees insurance. Anyway, that's going nowhere. Probably.

But he's got a good point about keeping the government out of our catheters and bedpans. We took a look at the Minnesota application to practice medicine-and you know what? We don't think the government should get involved either.COMIC SANS

BECAUSE, OH MY GOD, IS THAT FONT ACTUALLY COMIC SANS?

The poor Democrats are expending political captial faster than they spending tax dollars upon stimuli. They do not have enough left to get this healthcare thing passed, and will unlikely hold a super majority in just over a year from now. They blew it in epic fashion.

formerly it takes a lot etc.

You're drowning in the noise. It's all over, the Reps have shot their wad, people support reform and Obama, Dems have won, all that's left is the paperwork. This continuing noise is all about Rep primaries, attempting to appeal to the 20% who actually vote in primaries of the 25% of the electorate who still identify as Reps.

This is how Clinton and Obama differ: Clinton obsessed with every little noise from the 'vast right wing conspiracy' and got sucked into that vortex of nonsense, eventually signing welfare reform and DOMA because of it; Obama ignored the loud brayings and played his own game his way.

Yeah but they killed the public option and got everything watered down on the process so... EVERYONE WINS right? right?

formerly it takes a lot etc.

The public option lives.

Look, something substantial is going to come of this. If that were not true all of these idiots wouldn't be screaming so loudly. Is it going to be an overnight magic carpet ride to full-time, high-quality, free healthcare for all? No, of course not. there are alot of entrenched interests involved and the change we get will be much less than what some of us might wish. but it will be significant and it will be part of Obama's legacy. One thing Obama knows is that no one EVER eliminates a government entitlement program once it is created. Those programs, however, tend to expand to fill voids. The most important thing, for now, is that some sort of reform program be instituted. It will change and expand with time.

You are aware, right, that those of us in the heartland aren't watching Helvetica for typographical instruction? We don't spend all of our time going to hipster print shops, and even if we did, we couldn't afford the homemade paper. (Though, of course, small Minnesotan print shops are far more authentic than anything you'd find in New York.) This is so typical of you New Yorkers--this bias against Comic Sans, against a font that's the very symbol of populism, of democracy. You seem to think that using a font that comes standard on the most proletarian of operating systems renders one a redneck. Maybe if you left the printing district once in awhile, you'd know what Americans really think about fonts. And about America. And American fonts.

formerly it takes a lot etc.

Our apologies. We thought you favored WingDings.

I don't mind the comic sans, but I keep waiting for the punchline.

You know, some times a font is just a font. But I'm sure your passion for the sociology of American typography is admirable when it isn't frightening small children.

I thought so too. Then I image-Googled him and he didn't get much hotter.
