Dear Ben Stein's new column in Fortune; Do you know how much college costs for many, many Americans? No, not $70,000 a year. The answer is: nothing! Not a thing. Yes, sure, some bus tickets. Some books. But other than that, nothing. Because they do not pay tuition, and if you weren't rich, neither would your children, but you are rich, so pay, because you can, and that is how capitalism works, for now. P.S. Stop panicking about the declining white birth rate, it's embarrassing and also puts you in bad racist company. It doesn't mean anything bad that the black and brown people are out-breeding you, unless you are a racist. P.P.S. Felix Salmon thinks you are a monstrous monster, and it's hard to disagree, because, wow.

Let's forget about Mr. Crackpot here for a second. I want to move to this magical land in which people don't pay for college. And not just for my own small-fry. Can I move there retroactively? Cuz even with the scholarships, I'd like to have not paid all that fucking student debt back when I was living off of tuna and deciding between a six-pack of Busch or a pack of cigarettes.

Eventually I quit smoking so I could afford more booze. Wise choice, too. Six-pack of beer or pint of whiskey fairly stable over the past 10 years. Cigarettes in New York City, though? Yeesh. I tapped out at $5 a pack.
I don't know which community college Choire's friends go to, but you could move abroad and avoid tuition fees, you know.
But the funny thing (and you will like this KW): Even where public higher education is free gratis, the young'ns still manage to rack up debt that cuts into their beer budget and confines them to Ikea-furnished prefab high-rise apartment blocks for decades. (I am thinking of some European countries where government loans are for living on, not for paying tuition with.)
I am a (semi)poor who went to a fancy liberal arts college and the bulk of my tuition was waived. They may even have named this waiving "a scholarship," but it seemed to be the case that the sticker price was for those parents whose FAFSAs came in at a certain level. Not free -- but close enough.
