Willy DeVille, 1950-2009

Punk pioneer Willy DeVille passed away on Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A founder of the band Mink DeVille, he was a musician with astoundingly catholic tastes, incorporating elements of Cajun, Latin, funk and other music into his work. Above, Mink Deville's biggest hit, "Spanish Stroll." Below, Willy DeVille's mariachi version of "Hey! Joe."

Yeah this was terrible news. I met him in New Orleans once when he was sitting on his front porch strumming the most beautiful 12-string I have ever seen. He was definitely one of a kind and he will be missed.

It would be easy to say that he deserved a wider audience or more recognition, but I think he had a fine life full of interesting music. Can Madonna say that?

Maybe, but she'd need a dialogue coach to help her with it.

A totally underappreciated band. Spanish Stroll was on like half the mixes I made in my 20's.

That's it, I'm making you a friendship bracelet. And by friendship bracelet I mean ball-gag.

P.S. mind shooting me an email explaining how to post an avatar pic? I feel naked and anonymous.

I too am in the avitarless existential void.

Wow. Didn't know about this. The debut album is an absolute gem--"Venus of Avenue D," "Party Girls," etc.

Return to Magenta, Willy.

This one too, please. It's from an Unplugged concert in Germany, and he talks a bit for the first minute or so.
"Storybook Love". Cry your eyes out, I'll be there right with you.

Found this, and it creeps the living beejesus out of me. The man always had a way with utterly cool, perfectly controlled hysteria.
