William Calley's My Lai Apology

Speaking in Columbus, GA, last week, former Army lieutenant William Calley apologized for his role in the My Lai massacre. If you've never heard of My Lai, here's a little background: "In March 1968, U.S. soldiers gunned down hundreds of civilians in the Vietnamese hamlet of My Lai. The Army at first denied, then downplayed the event, saying most of the dead were Vietcong. But in November 1969, journalist Seymour Hersh revealed what really happened and Calley was court martialed and convicted of murder." There is, of course, much more to the story. For additional perspective, read this. But remember: It's about the massacre of hundreds of civilians. It gets a little grim.

How long will it take for the Republican Right to link this to Obama's attack on all things good and American?

This story is from Columbus, Georgia, not the one in Ohio.

I can remember circa 1970 it was hipstery slang to call an underling who was sacrficed as a fall guy a "Lieutenant Calley."
