Whiskey Ad Pretty Good, Actually

AdFreak asks if this is "the best ad of the year so far," and, having watched it, I'm inclined to say, "Yeah, probably." Then again, I'm a sucker for whiskey and Robert Carlyle. A five-and-a-half minute single-take monologue about Johnnie Walker may not sound like the most appealing thing in the world, but give it a minute or two; you might be tempted to stick it out. Or go have a drink. Either way!

I wonder if they did other takes with Carlyle looking more into the camera, so he would look us in the eye?

Director Jamie Rafn: "The take that you have seen is the very last take we did at 8pm on the last day of the shoot. Take 40. The tension as we watched Robert do this take was unbelievable. It was such a good take at every stage and so the longer it went on without any fluffs the greater the pressure grew for nothing to go wrong. When he got to the end and I got to call cut there was this huge roar and applause from the crew and agency and I knew we had it."

Usquebaugh; water of life. In Scotland, their own is spelled w-h-i-s-k-y. All others are spelled s-h-i-t-e. But if by whiskey, you meant whisky, then I am for it. Hell, even if you meant vodka or gin or rum, I am still for it. Tequila, not so much. We used to be friends, but had too many bad nights together. Damn, I am thirsty.

Gah! Balk, you cocksucker! Why didn't you warn me there would be bagpipes?!
Not cool, bro, not cool.
