The Very Real Consequences Of 'Internet Addiction'

A month after China's Ministry of Health banned the use of electroshock treatments on patients suffering from "Internet addiction", a sixteen-year-old boy sent to a rehab clinic in Southern China for treatment was beaten to death by staffers within hours of his arrival.

Zhan Wenbin, principal of a training centre similar to the camp in Nanning, said that military methods â€" such as total immersion and physical training â€" and mental consultation were needed to cure internet addiction.

So this goes in the 'cure' column.

it's the mental consultation that makes the cure therapeutic.

It's important that the distinction is made here about this being a private clinic (which means it won't be made). These were thugs that beat a kid to death (they're arrested now) but by throwing the Health Ministry's ban it almost makes those things sound connected. This is like the couple kids who've died in the desert at behavior re-education camps in the US.

Although to be fair, I have met 16 year olds that I have wanted to beat to death too. We really don't know just how obnoxious this kid was.
