Obama Poster No Joke (Haha, Get It?)
National Review's Jonah Goldberg isn't quite sure what this poster—supposedly popping up all over the place in Los Angeles—really means, but he does hope we won't allow ourselves to get bogged down in the idea that putting Barack Obama in whiteface might be freighted with some unpleasant racial connotations. Focus on the socialism, okay?
this has been popping up in LA for a few months now – but all of them i've seen have been torn down or otherwise extensively defaced so fast i've not been able to get a photo of a clean one. to me, this suggests that the message is not nearly as popular as jonah seems to wish it were.
as for the whiteface issue – i genuinely do not understand how the joker fits into the whole socialism accusation, so it's very difficult to see it as anything but racial. unless it's positing that obama will die accidentally of pharmaceutical combinations?
What's racial about it? He's not in "whiteface," he's in Joker makeup. All I see is not very well thought out imagery.
I see a lot of these sorts of things. A LOT. And i've learned that it isn't how it fits. That doesn't matter. People that make these just look for an iconic image everyone will recognize and then put Obama into it with whatever dipshit message. The 10 minutes you out into thinking about the connection is 9 1/2 more minutes than the manufacturer did, so….
