Jim Dickinson, 1941-2009

by Balk posted @10:20 AM

Legendary producer Jim Dickinson passed away this weekend at the age of 67. Dickinson, who worked with the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Ry Cooder, Willy DeVille, and countless others (as well as siring two-thirds of the North Mississippi All Stars), produced such classics as Big Star's "Third" and the Replacements' "Pleased To Meet Me," an album which went immediately into heavy rotation in at least one 14-year-old boy's room back in 1987. There's a nice remembrance here.

One of the hidden treasures of American music. Dixie Fried is worth your four dollars if you ever locate it in a cutout bin (are there still such places?); and the hysterical, chaotic Alex Chilton record Like Flies on Sherbet has Dickinson's fingerprints all over the neck of the broken bottle.

RIP. He worked on many amazing records. Now let us never discuss that horrible Primal Scream album ever again.
