Austria-the tiny, psychopathic Canada to Germany's America-is back in the news as Sasha Baron Cohen's Bruno opens worldwide. How will Austrians, a proud and sensitive people whose only real flaws are their occasional bouts of Jew-killing, immigrant-bashing, war criminal-electing, and child-imprisoning, react to the film? Will they be offended? Alfons Haider, the Austrian entertainer upon who the flamboyant character is rumored to be based, give the BBC a qualified answer of yes. But not because of the gay stuff!

This guy was on the radio this morning, arguing with some dude from GLAAD.
He looks exactly as I pictured him.
As a proud Austrian-American, 150 years or so removed from the Fatherland, I give this film my blessing. By the way, have given the Prussians what for yet? We need a morale boost after that drubbing those treacherous Sardinians gave us.
Bravo to Bethany of the BBC for getting that last line about the Austrian leiderhosen industry out with a straight face! Nicely done!
I dunno. I think they should embrace it and use the publicity to promote the Austrian gay scene. Aren't gays flush with cash and per Choire they love to travel, right? Can't possible go worse for them than for the Kazakhs. (Note: Check to see if there is an Austrian gay scene).
I hear there's quite the underground scene.
If only Thomas Bernhard were still alive to write a novelization of the movie!
Nothing on God's earth so attractive as a nice English TV hostess.
