Atheism Can Be Just As Boring As Religion!

...but it sure helps!
I saw one of these bus ads on my way over to the Awl offices this morning, and I have to tell, you, I was a little underwhelmed. I mean, as an atheist I'm all for anything that helps further the cause or at least increases understanding between rational thinkers and Godites, but is this really the most effective way to go about it? Who is going to get excited enough to change their preconceptions with this dry and unappealing message? How about something like, "Illicit blowjobs feel even better without the nagging religious guilt," or "You want to spend an hour of your life listening to some guy reading from Ephesians, go ahead; but I'll save you a seat at the bar during the game just in case." I mean, let's offer some incentives at least.

I like a little religious fervor in the morning. It smells like Victory.

Maybe "You don't have to be a moral or ethical person to believe in God" would have packed a little more punch.

I don't know a single atheist who reads bus ads.

And there are zero bus ad-reading religionists whose brains have any remaining preach-to availability.

DC wins again! OUR bus ads feature a skinny dude in a deflated Santa outfit shrugging and making a "this really is as good as it gets" face under the text "Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness' sake!"

I like the "or." Cleverly sidesteps the fact you need religion to be ethical AND moral. I guess.

And then were you splashed with water from a big puddle in the street?

"Sleep in on Sundays."

My Number Is My Address

This brings to mind the atheist Summercamp Richard Dawkins is setting up in the England. I love atheism and all but any Summercamp not explicitly and exclusively dedicated to providing a complete simulacra of the Camp North Star (Meatballs) experience is pointless.

So didn't my postman just tell me that he's only getting Saturday off? That no one is getting Friday or Monday... making for the usual two day weekend, despite the occasion?

I told him: ' well yeah, I guess if you actually have a job at all right now, you shouldn't be expecting Any perks. Not even for the 4th of July.

God bless America.

(Hey! I have Friday And Monday off! As well as any other day you want to mention right now? Yay.)

Is the fact that "approaching zero is nowhere the same as zero" better for the monotheists or the atheists?

It's just written that way so it'll look 'Biblical' and impress that target audience.

It's not the best strategy, true. Most atheists can't read.
