I met someone who works in a money management firm in Midtown-one of the many people getting the one-day-a-week furlough this summer. It's pretty much just like France in New York City! This person reported that it was "awesome" working four days a week, in exchange for $250 less a paycheck. I can see how that would be the case! This person then said it would be great if it continued forever and I was like, "Um, be careful what you wish for." But seriously there is no reason why everyone shouldn't work four days a week. Except that it is a slippery slope and only working three days a week is bad because then you are poor and that is so next.

I already work four days a week (just like most everybody else with an office job). It's just that I have to stretch it with garbage and fun junk like this to five.
Time is worth far more than money if you can afford it.
HIGHLY SATISFIED
Huh, by my math, assuming you're being paid every other week, you were originally making ... $32,500, take-home? My vision of "money management firms" paying ludicrous salaries to the morons who destroyed the economy has been firmly reset.
Is it $250 subtracted from his raw salary, or from what he gets in his paycheck after taxes, benefits, 401k and the like?
I was too horrified to ask!!!!
I'm another one of those furloughed folks. So far I've had to work a few Fridays (I got paid for them) but during the ones I don't I sit in bed, surfing the 'net, blinds closed, unproductive, just being a sad pile of blah.
It's going to be an awesome summer!
I spent a summer like that! I had impetigo on my arms and was too ugly to go out.
Meanwhile, I'm working almost 60 hours a week and barely keeping up. Sorry about your industry failure. Want to learn about manufacturing?
Which subway-ad college is it that offers welding class? That would be a great use of the day off.
my Dad was a welder for 35yrs and did very well for himself. In fact he's thinking about going back b/c with benefits (and union membership) you're getting around $90/ hr. yes you read that correctly (35/hr for the welder, 40/hr for the machine, and around 15/hr in benefits).
Well I'm being laid off next month (from one of those money management firms in midtown) and I am still working 5 days a week, but only until 3pm and noon on Fridays. In at 7am though, so there's that. Still getting my full salary which is paltry and living off past savings at this point (yes no bonus for me this year). Until I move home and away from here.
Faith Popcorn: "Getting your salary cut 20% is the new awesome!"
I'm worried that "furlough day" will translate into "do the same amount of work (or more!) in less time for less pay." Especially since I currently work far more than the 40 hr/wk for which I am technically paid.
