Reaction To Obama Finance Schemes: Everyone Growing Less Happy

WEE TROUBLES!Times biz columnist Joe Nocera weighs in on the Obama administration's financial system regulatory plans: "Everywhere you look in the plan, you see the same thing: additional regulation on the margin, but nothing that amounts to a true overhaul." The FT editorializes, in their fey way: "The administration's proposals will disappoint those hoping for a tidier US regulatory system." (Pass the crumpets much?) And at The Baseline Scenario, the most damning point of all.

There is no greater transparency or public accountability in the regulatory process... There appears to be no mention that corporate governance within these large banks failed totally. How on earth can you expect these banks to operate in a responsible manner unless and until you address the reckless manner in which they (a) compensate themselves, (b) destroy shareholder value, (c) treat boards of directors as toothless wonders? The profound silence on this point from the administration – including some of our finest economic, financial, and legal thinkers – is breathtaking.

I <3 Baseline Scenario. (even though I always feel intellectually inadequate while reading it.)

The biggest problem with his plan isn't that it fails to give the bankers the smack down they deserve - it's that it fails to reform the regulators. All they are doing is creating a new Homeland Security department - just one more layer of bureaucracy without solving the problems of the underlying agencies.

Tuna hits the nail on the head. It's the Enron issue all over again. If you'll remember, after Enron collapsed we got Sarbox, which did nothing to help with transparency. Furthermore, the academics and lawyers inside these regulators will always be one step behind those in the actual marketplace. Go ahead, write some new rules, and see if they are not circumvented within 6 mos.

sorry your heinous

This is disappointing

"finest economic, financial, and legal thinkers". When will people finally stop taking this notion seriously? These people are not thinkers, they are not truth seekers. They are manipulators. They learn a system and how to manipulate it.

It appears that Obama has at least 99 Problems, and that being a bitch is clearly one.

In other news: he's very uncomfortable with gay marriage.

Not news: bankers like being on top.

The rest of us: also fucked. And no, Auto Tune won't save us now.
