Mildly funny story! While New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg was flipping out on Observer reporter Azi Paybarah, calling him "a disgrace" in front of tons of reporters, the Mayor had apparently already penned a moving tribute to outgoing Observer editor Peter Kaplan. That's right: Mayor Mike stars on the front page-sandwiched between Tom Wolfe and Candace Bushnell-of a Kaplan tribute paper released last night at Kaplan's farewell party.
I believe The Observer has been so good for so long because you and your team have created a newspaper as lively, stimulating and fascinating as New York City itself…. No publication sends up life in New York quite like The Observer. But of course, what has really distinguished The Observer as a truly great newspaper has been the quality of its writing. Your work to nurture young reporters and help them find and develop their voices has made an enormous impact not only on The Observer, but also on the national media. The network of Observer alumni who now populate the nation's leading newspapers and magazines is a legacy few can match.
Meanwhile, Mayor Mike gets roasted in the real paper this week for his troubles with the press.
