Land Of The Lost Great For Matt Lauer, Nobody Else

Lauer: Possible Oscar?Earlier in the week, Variety delivered a largely negative review for the new Will Ferrell movie Land of the Lost. ("It's never a good sign when 'Today' host Matt Lauer... delivers the least irritating performance in a movie.") The film opens today. What's the critical consensus?

"To report that Matt Lauer, in two lengthy scenes as himself, gives the funniest performance in 'Land of the Lost' is to damn it with the faintest praise possible."

"Be forewarned: You know there's a problem when a movie opens and closes with Matt Lauer, 'The Today Show' host, flexing his acting chops opposite Ferrell. Sadly, that's the best part of this primal prescription for boredom from director Brad Silberling ("Casper," "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events.")"

"You know something is amiss when Matt Lauer, playing himself, steals the show."

"When the highlight is a couple of mock interviews by Matt Lauer, you should think about going straight to DVD."

"There is exactly one funny bit in 'Land of the Lost,' and it stands out because it comes at the very beginning and the very end. Will Ferrell, as arrogant scientist Dr. Rick Marshall, appears on the 'Today' show to discuss his time-travel theories and promote his latest book. Matt Lauer, thinking he's a crackpot, interviews him with unmistakable disdain and chafes at Marshall's attempts to hijack the segment. (Lauer's deadpan comic timing is great, by the way. Maybe he should think about a career in acting if this TV thing doesn't work out.)"

Sit-down comedy.

This doesn't surprise me. I thought Matt Lauer's turn as a Harlem pimp-turned-herion-addict was the best part of "American Gangster." He totally stole the movie from Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

that was Andy Rooney.

To be fair, reviews like this from comedy-juggernauts Bloomberg and Newsday are not persuasive. Newsday's Guzman liked Wolverine and Terminator 4: Dark Knight, so, you know....

See now I was thinking that I wasn't going to see it.
