Today on the Internet: Asian Poses Dot Com is "the definitive guide to Asian poses." 1. It is run by a Chinese guy. 2. It is actually overly-researched to the point where something that seems racist and awkward actually begins to impress you with its internal logic? 3. Also still weird. [via]
something seems missing from these pictures….
Nah.
That's how I've always felt about The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.
Is she about to yodel? I'm confused.
Having spent a lot of time in Asia, this site is hilarious. It used to be in Tokyo in the 90s that the two-finger "peace" sign was the main pose. (I have a photo of a friend – 23 at the time – at her mom's grave (suicide!) and the woman is doing the peace finger thing.) China caught on though and Korea and it's entirely one of those cultural things we just do not have in the west.
Also: this is a perfect example of a Chinese singer doing "hand poses." I add it because it's so embarrassing that I am in it playing air guitar.

I lived in Korea last year and the sideways peace sign was so incredibly ubiquitous that even though I thought it looked stupid, especially for a white person, I found myself doing it every time I was in a picture.
Can I buy stock on this site? 1) I'm sure it's going to outperform I Can Has a Cheezburger and 2) it'll give me a plausible excuse when my wife finds out I've been looking through it for hours every day.
I'm a University teacher in China, I have a stack of student photo namecards with these kinds of poses on them. I don't get it either. But it is, in fact, common.
Huh, I was just searching for Asian poses myself this morning.
A fine example of why I absolutely adore the important work The Awl is doing to inform and educate.
I may or may not have teared up just now.
By the end of the day, I fully expect one of you clever clogs to have launched JuliaAllisonPoses.com.

You're doing it all wrong man, all wrong.
I also lived in Asia, but I was there for 8 years.
At that point, you've started taking on some of the culture. It got so bad that I even do some of these poses, and I'm a black female ;) I'm particularly fond of the sideways peace sign.
