Senate Won't Pay To Close Gitmo

Neat, the U.S. Senate will officially not pay to close Guantanamo, because, OMG, terrorists on American soil! Dear everyone: there are already hundreds of "terrorists" being held in U.S. prisons.

It costs money to CLOSE a prison?

Why not just turn off the lights and leave?

No you don't have to open any of the cells first.

Gee. Maybe we might actually have to TRY one or two of these people in the next decade or so.

But what happens if some slimy lawyer gets these vermin off, by proving their innocence? What's that? They can't be found innocent? Because they aren't CHARGED with anything?

Well, that's fair, then.

In one of my prior law firm jobs, I worked pro bono on behalf of some of the Yemenis that are imprisoned in Gitmo. Even made a long visit down there to meet and interview them for their habeas corpus cases.

The vast majority of the men imprisoned (nb: "detained" is Orwellian newspeak I refuse to use) at Gitmo are not guilty of anything other than speaking Arabic in Pakistan in 2002. Bet you didn't know that was a crime! Surprise! If you spoke Arabic in Pakistan you were easily identified by the Pakistani spy service as a potential Al Queda member. Layer in the fact that the CIA was paying $50,000 for each "Al Queda member" and you can see why these schmucks ended up in the dragnet.

Most of the men down there should have been released long ago to their country of origin (even the Bush Administration trolls in the Department of Justice/Defense admitted this). However, we can't send some of them home because to do so would invite retaliation and potentially torture/death. (for example, the Uighers are a persecuted ethnic muslim minority in China, several dozen of which currently "reside" at Gitmo and none of which are even "enemy combatants" under the Bush regime).

The obvious answer is that these dudes should get a ticket to Tampa or Fresno, a couple thousand dollars for their trouble and enrollment in auto mechanic school at US taxpayer expense. They have been falsely imprisoned, tortured and vilified. They are men with no country to call home.
