Lacroix Files For Bankruptcy *WEEPING*

by Choire posted @12:35 PM

*SOBS*NOOOO! The company that bears the name of designer-magician Christian Lacroix has filed for bankruptcy protection! (The company was sold four years ago, to the Falic Group; they have been quietly trying to unload Lacroix for a few months.) This is horrendous!

However! Repeated visits to the New York City store on 57th Street this spring anecdotally show that Lacroix has sold essentially zero articles of clothing this year. There was a fabulous new wicker purse, of which the New York store was shipped three, if I recall correctly, and two were sold. But the menswear had basically gotten dusty; the ties remained rolled and sagging; the flashy men's dress shirts were getting a little glassy from being tried on repeatedly and never sold; the heels were not trotting out the door.

This is sad. Christian Lacroix is a genius, and produces totally reasonably-priced yet exquisite lines of ready to wear and knitwear, as well as the most gorgeous womens' shoes and bags—and absolutely insane accessories. But worse than all that—after the final Valentino show, just a year ago, Lacroix was the last real couture house. NOW THERE IS NOTHING.

I'm so glad you were the one to do this post.

So Falic just couldn't keep it up, eh?

Lacroix should have taken that Target deal.

that's high fashion? Those dresses look like the kind of toilet paper roll covers made in arts and crafts classes in old folks homes.

I'm a sucker for dresses with pockets. So how soon can I see these babies at a discount retailer?

Between Choire's trips to Tom Ford and the LaCroix store, all's I can say is I need to get an electrolyte product to advertise on my Facebook page. I do agree LaCroix's stuff was really pretty, especially those ties. But you say it was accessible and affordable, which I think is the problem – that was not communicated very well – I for one never bothered to stop and look at it because I just assumed I'd get depressed and start crying if I looked at the price tags.

In case you are wondering, no, the current collection at Christian Lacroix (36 East 57th Street) is not yet on sale despite the risk they may elect to "liquidate" the company under Chapter 11. The prices are said to be changing (discounted) in Mid-June. If you can't wait, suggest you take a look at the extensive selection at Emanual Ungaro, where everything is now 40% off.

I didn't know Lacroix has a menswear line, though I do have a thick, itchy black wool tie from Lacroix which I enjoy wearing to funerals.
