On Second Thought, Phil Markoff Was Always a Big Jerk, Says Girl Who Knew Him in Ninth Grade

phil-markoff2Today the Boston Herald tracks down "Caitlin," who was in ninth grade Spanish with Craigslist killer Phil Markoff, and discovers that he was really really mean back then, but in this totally, like, sadistic way where he acted like he was better than everyone else! Sounds kinda like all the doctors we know! We also learn that he might have picked up his gambling habit from his mother, who, as it turns out, worked in a nearby casino.

Accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff was a geeky bowler and high school "bully" with a gambling jones who frequented the local Indian casino where his mother works, the Herald has learned.

"He had this hatred for people he thought were beneath him," said Caitlin, a 23-year-old high school classmate who asked that her last name be withheld. "He saw me as beneath him and he needed to degrade me. I think he had a complex."

She goes on to say: "He was just a bully," she said. "He would get picked on, but I never felt sorry for him because he was mean. He had this arrogance that he was better than you."

I would and would not like to learn that he was robbing people to pay off his mother's gambling debts.

There is something so very Scott Peterson about him.

I hope we do not make a habit of judging our criminals by what semi-anonymous high school classmates thought of them.

Oh dear god I know. "Well, she really seemed to spend a lot of time on her computer and she fell down a lot on the field hockey field."

Unless of course semi-anonymous source says, "He was quiet, kept to himself, killed four or five people."

"phil markoff" is one of those names that seems like it's going to be a filthy pun and then somehow turns out not to be one.

I think it'll be quite some time before we really understand what drove this man to kill.
